KOTA BARU: About RM3.8 million in gold jewellery was stolen from the vault of the Ar-Rahn Islamic pawnshop here in what is believed to be one of the biggest heists in the country.
About RM390,000 in cash and a substantial amount of jewellery were left behind by the thieves in their rush to escape.
State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said four intruders were believed to have broken into the three-storey building in Jalan Temenggong early Saturday morning.
They were believed to have entered the building through the roof.
"They broke the roof tiles and proceeded to the vault on the ground floor. They left the same way with the stolen jewellery."
Police who went to the scene when the alarm went off found the wires of the closed-circuit television camera had been cut.
"There was a hole in the wall leading into the vault."
Asked whether it was an inside job, he said police were investigating. The exact amount of jewellery stolen was not disclosed.
The Ar-Rahn pawnshop is owned by Permodalan Kelantan Bhd (PKB), a subsidiary of the State Economic Development Corporation. PKB's management said that the branch would be closed until further notice, and it would accept responsibility for all items pawned by their customers.
